Laos es un país con diversos grupos étnicos, cada uno con habilidades artesanales únicas y altamente especializadas. Sin embargo, las presiones de la vida moderna y la disponibilidad de productos importados a bajo precio han llevado a los laosianos a abandonar sus artesanías y su sustento rural. Como resultado, muchas artesanías laosianas están desapareciendo. Nuestros equipos de diseño y producción trabajan en estrecha colaboración con grupos de artesanos laosianos para crear artículos que se adapten a estilos de vida modernos y naturales, conservando al mismo tiempo el espíritu de la artesanía tradicional. Guiados por los principios del comercio justo, trabajamos para crear oportunidades de empleo para los habitantes de las aldeas, especialmente para las mujeres, y para reducir la pobreza. Cada producto se elabora y termina en las aldeas.

El algodón utilizado para fabricar estas almohadas se planta a mano y se riega con las lluvias monzónicas. La planta tarda ocho meses en producir la flor de algodón; luego, se recolecta y desmota a mano (una actividad difícil y tediosa) y, finalmente, se hila a mano. Los tejedores utilizan telares tradicionales de madera y bambú para transformar la fibra de algodón en tela de algodón.

El teñido con índigo es una técnica que se transmite de generación en generación y un arte antiguo impregnado de mitos. A las mujeres que menstrúan se les impide acercarse a los frascos de índigo por temor a perturbar el "espíritu del índigo" e inutilizar el tinte. El tinte índigo se elabora con las hojas y brotes de la planta "kharm", que crece en muchas zonas de Laos. Obtener la materia prima para el índigo puede ser fácil, pero su elaboración es todo un arte. Implica la fermentación del "kharm" y el mantenimiento de la mezcla en frascos herméticos a la temperatura adecuada.

Artisan Profile

Laos is a country of diverse ethnic groups, each with unique and highly adept craft and artisan skills, but the pressures of modern life and the availability of cheap factory made imports have resulted in Lao people giving up their crafts and their rural livelihoods. As a result, many of the crafts of Laos are vanishing art forms. Our design and production teams work closely with artisan groups in Laos to create items that fit modern, natural lifestyles while still retaining the spirit of traditional craftsmanship. Guided by the principles of fair trade, we work to create employment opportunities for villagers, especially women, and to reduce poverty and each product is made and finished in the villages.The cotton used to make these pillows is planted by hand and watered by the monsoon rains. It takes eight months for the plant to produce the cotton flower, then it is picked by hand, ginned by hand (a difficult and tedious activity, and then spun into yarn by hand. Traditional wood and bamboo looms are used by weavers to transform the cotton fiber into cotton cloth.Indigo dying is a skill that is passed on through generations and is an ancient art steeped in myths. Menstruating women are kept away from the indigo jars for fear of upsetting the “indigo spirit” and rendering the dye useless. Indigo dye is made from the leaves and shoots of the “kharm” plant, which grows in many areas in Laos. Getting the raw materials for indigo may be easy, but making it is an art.  It involves fermentation of the “kharm” and keeping the mixture in air tight jars at the required temperature. in      in inin      in
