Rayon is a semi-synthetic fiber made from regenerated cellulose, typically derived from wood pulp. While it originates from natural sources, the cellulose is chemically processed to create soft, breathable fibers. Rayon was the first manufactured fiber developed as a silk alternative in the late 19th century, and today it includes several subtypes such as viscose, modal, and lyocell — each using different processing methods.

Rayon is valued for its silky texture, lightweight drape, and moisture absorption. It is commonly used in clothing, linings, home textiles, and personal care products. While the fiber itself is biodegradable, its environmental impact varies greatly depending on how it’s produced — with open-loop viscose being more harmful, and closed-loop lyocell or certified modal offering lower-impact alternatives.
